Fitchburg State Runs Past Becker, 4-0

Gimenez nets a pair of scores in Falcons second consecutive victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 7, 2013) – The Fitchburg State men's soccer team collected its second consecutive victory as it registered a 4-0 victory over non-conference foe Becker College this afternoon at Elliot Field.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring early and never looked back as freshman Jared Burns (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) notched his second goal of the season with header off Zachary Tracy's (Richmond, R.I.) throw-in. Freshman Steven Martinez (Middlesex, N.J.) followed suit in the 19th minute with his first collegiate goal off a Burn's feed, while Mauro Gimenez (Fitchburg, Mass./North Central) capped the first half scoring with a marker in the 42nd minute.

In the second half, the Falcons maintained much of the possession, netting one goal with seven shots throughout the frame. Gimenez netted the lone goal of the half as he headed in a Calvin La Rose (Rutland, Mass.) corner kick from the left side.

For the game, Fitchburg State dominated from start to finish, totaling a 31-7 advantage in targets and 5-2 margin in corner kicks. In net, freshman Rondinelle DePaula (Leominster, Mass.) recorded the shutout victory in his first collegiate start, totaling three saves over the complete game effort, while senior Tim MacDonald (Holden, Mass.) stopped nine shots in the loss for the Hawks.

Fitchburg State (3-1, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Thursday as it visits UMass Boston at 3:30 p.m. Becker (0-4, 0-0 NECC) will travel to Nichols College on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
