UMass Boston Clips Fitchburg State, 3-2

Gimenez registers three points in Falcons non-conference setback

BOSTON, Mass. (September 12, 2013) – Freshman forward Mauro Gimenez (Fitchburg, Mass.) notched three points on one goal and one assist as Fitchburg State fell to UMass Boston, 3-2 in non-conference men's soccer action this afternoon at Clark Athletic Field in Boston.

In the first half, UMass Boston took the lead midway through the frame as freshman Edmilson Barros (Boston, Mass.) fired a shot into the lower left corner for his third marker on the year on an assist from sophomore Dylan Hawkins (North Easton, Mass.) for the 1-0 lead.

The Beacons doubled their lead at the 35:51 mark when junior Lenir Lima (Mindelo, Calif.) blasted a shot from 18 yards out that just tucked inside the near post for his first collegiate tally to give the hosts a 2-0 margin going into the break.

Following intermission, UMass Boston upped its advantage (3-0) in the 75th minute of play as Lima crossed a ball inside the box to junior Rolando Barbosa (Fogo, Cape Verde), who headed into the lower right corner for his fourth score of the season.

The Falcons rallied less than a minute later when senior Carmen Bordonaro (Saugus, Mass.) received a feed from Gimenez and slipped the ball past Beacon goaltender Camilo Florez (Manizales, Columbia) to the near post to make the score 3-1.

Fitchburg State cut the margin to just one (3-2) at the 77:05 mark as Gimenez collected a loose ball, following a failed clearing attempt by UMass Boston and headed the ball into the back of the net for his second marker of the year.

With time winding down, the Green and Gold nearly knotted the score at 3-3 in the 83rd minute when Bordonaro broke through the Beacon defense and fired a shot on goal but Hawkins slid in to make an outstanding team save to preserve the 3-2 victory for the hosts.

Throughout the match, UMass Boston held a 16-6 margin in shots, while also holding a slim 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. Between the pipes, freshman Colin Jepson (Sandwich, Mass.) made his collegiate debut, stopping five shots in the complete game effort for Fitchburg State, while Florez made one second half save in 45 minutes of work for the Beacons.

Fitchburg State (3-2-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it travels to WPI to battle the Engineers at 4 p.m. UMass Boston (4-2-0, 0-0-0 LEC) will visit Newbury College on Sunday for a contest starting at 2 p.m.
