Falcons Shutout Westfield State, 1-0

Gimenez nets lone goal in Falcons MASCAC victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State men's soccer team blanked the Owls of Westfield State University, 1-0, in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's soccer opener this afternoon.

Fitchburg State improves to 3-3-0 (1-0-0 MASCAC) on the season, while Westfield State drops to 1-5-1 overall (0-1-0 MASCAC).

Following a scoreless first half, Fitchburg State took lead at the 53:43 mark as sophomore Mauro Gimenez took a feed from junior Alex Calder in front of the net and deposited the ball inside the near post for his second score of the season to put the Falcons up 1-0.
The Green and Gold nearly double its advantage minutes last when junior Zachary Tracy spilt a pair of defenders and blasted a shot on frame that Owls keeper Keith Hevey was able to turn away to keep the score 1-0.

In the opening period of play, Westfield State threatened in the 37th minute of play as freshman midfielder Mitch Goulet collected a loose ball from 20 yards out and fired a shot that sailed just wide of the upper right corner to preserve the 0-0 stalemate going into the break.

For the contest, Westfield State held a narrow11-9 advantage in shots, while also holding a 5-2 margin in corner kicks. In net, senior Aidan Hanratty finished with five saves in the complete game shutout for the Falcons, while Hevey stopped three shots for the Owls

Fitchburg State returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Regis College for a contest starting at 5 p.m. Westfield State will host the Blazers of Elms College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
