Fitchburg State Runs Past Becker, 2-0

Calder nets first collegiate goal in Falcons second victory of the season

LEICESTER, Mass. (September 13, 2014) – The Fitchburg State men's soccer team was in action this afternoon, defeating the Hawks of Becker College, 2-0 in non-conference action at Alumni Field.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring early and never looked back as sophomore Alex Calder (Melbourne, Vic.) notched his first collegiate tally in the 14th minute of action as the sophomore forward's free kick found the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.

Three minutes later, the Falcons continued to pressure the Hawks' defense when sophomore forward Steven Martinez (Middlesex, N.J.) fired a shot that hit off the crossbar before classmate Mauro Gimenez (Fitchburg, Mass.) gathered the loose ball and headed in shot for the 2-0 lead going into halftime.

Following the break, the Green and Gold nearly upped its margin at the 51:24 mark as Gimenez blasted a shot on goal but Becker goaltender Jacob Feltman (Griffin, Ga.) came up with an outstanding save on the breakaway attempt, resulting in the 2-0 final.

For the game, Fitchburg State dominated from start to finish, totaling a 24-1 advantage in shots and 7-3 margin in corner kicks. In net, senior Aidan Hanratty (E.
