Young nets first collegiate tally in Falcons non-conference setback

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 11, 2014) – Junior forward Pedro Dasilva (Fogo, Cape Verde) registered the game-winning marker in the 108th minute of player as UMass Boston defeated Fitchburg State, 2-1 in double overtime in non-conference men's soccer action this evening at Elliot Field.

In the first half, UMass Boston took the lead just 6:59 into the stanza as sophomore Edmilson Barros (Boston, Mass.) fired a shot from 15 yards out into the upper right corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.

The Beacons nearly doubled their lead in the 35th minute of action when senior Douglas Silveira (Revere, Mass.) fired a shot that appeared to be heading into the net but Falcon keeper Aidan Hanratty (E. Bridgewater, Mass) made a sprawling save to his left to keep the score 1-0 going into the break..

Following intermission, Fitchburg State knotted the score (1-1) with just over six minutes remaining in regulation as freshman forward Zachary Young (Capo Beach, Calif.) collected a loose ball of a shot from sophomore Nicholas Masley (Oxford, Mass.) and deposited the ball into inside the far post for his first collegiate tally to send the game into extra time.

In the second overtime period, the Falcons threatened just second into the frame when junior Josh Hofer (Manchester, N.H.) blasted a shot that ricocheted off the cross bar, setting the stages for Dasilva's game-winner at the 107:54 as Dasilva fired a shot into the back of the net for his first score of the season, resulting in the 2-1 final.

Throughout the match, UMass Boston held a 28-22 margin in shots, while the Falcons held a narrow 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Between the pipes, Hanratty registered nine saves in the complete game effort for Fitchburg State, while junior Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.) made four stops for the Beacon en-route to his first victory on the year.

Fitchburg State (1-3-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it travels to Becker College to battle the Hawks at 12 p.m. UMass Boston (2-3-0, 0-0-0 LEC) will host the Vikings of Salem State University on Wednesday for a contest starting at 3:30 p.m.
