Falcons Rally Past Becker, 2-0

FITCHBURG, Mass. - Fitchburg State University scored two goals in the second half as they defeated Becker College, 2-0 in a non-conference men's soccer tilt on Saturday afternoon at Elliot Field.

With the victory, Fitchburg State improved to 2-2 on the campaign - winning their last two contests. The Hawks fall to 0-5 on the year with the loss.

Despite putting up 15 shots in the opening half, the hosts were unable to get anything past sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Castro. Fitchburg State's greatest opportunity in the opening stanza came at the 40 minute mark when freshman Matt Beauregard had a fast break opportunity in front of the Becker defensive line, but a sprawling Castro snagged the shot at the top of the box to preserve the scoreless tie.

The Falcons would finally crack the score column at the 56th minute in the closing stanza when Mauro Gimenez found a cross from Jared Burns in front of the net for his first tally of the season. Less than a minute later it would be Burns for the marker on a feed from Franck Wansi to double the Green & Gold lead to 2-0.

Fitchburg State continued their offensive pressure, while the defense held strong to preserve the 2-0 victory for the remainder of the contest.

Freshman keeper Connor Smith picked up his first collegiate victory, making three saves in the winning effort. His counterpart Castro had 11 stops in a strong day in net despite the loss.

The Falcons out-shot Becker 29-6 overall, while holding a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, Fitchburg State improves to 10-2 in the history between these two schools and have been victorious in the last five meetings - including all seven meetings at Elliot Field.

The Flock will return to the pitch on Elliot Field next Saturday, Sept. 19 as they host Framingham State in their first MASCAC game of the year at 1:30 pm. Becker will be in search of their first win of the season Thursday, Sept. 17 as they host Pine Manor at 4:00 pm.
