Fitchburg State Silenced by Beavers, 3-0

BABSON PARK, Mass. - Fitchburg State University was unable to withstand a second half surge from Babson College, falling 3-0 in a non-conference men's soccer match on Wednesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

Fitchburg State drops to 2-3-0, while Babson goes to 4-2-0 on the young season in the first match between the two schools.

Senior Tyler Carlos scored twice inside of two minutes early in the second half for the hosts, while classmate Telvin Lopes also scored once for the Beavers, who also got an assist from first-year Addison Choi

The Beavers outshot the Falcons 10-4 over the opening 45 minutes but were unable to break the scoreless deadlock until early in the second half. Following a foul on junior Shane Mandel on the right side of the box, Carlos buried his penalty kick in the 50th minute for a 1-0 lead.

He followed it up with his second marker of the game just 1:51 later, eluding a defender and sliding a shot inside the near post for a two-goal edge. Lopes later added his second goal of the season in the 75th minute, converting a feed from Choi for a 3-0 edge.

Fitchburg State's best chance to get on the board came in the 78th minute when junior's Jared Burns' 15-yard shot deflected off the left post.

Freshman goalkeeper Connor Smith turned away six shots on the afternoon for the Falcons. His counterpart Stephen Donato made four of his five saves in the first half for the victors in the clean sheet.

The Beavers held a 20-7 advantage in shots and finished with a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Fitchburg State hosts Framingham State at 1:30 p.m for their first MASCAC contest of the season. Babson opens New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at Coast Guard at 12 p.m.
