Fitchburg State Rebounds Over Mass. Maritime, 1-0

Burns nets team-leading sixth goal for Falcons in MASCAC victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State men's soccer team defeated Mass. Maritime Academy, 1-0 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Conference (MASCAC) men's soccer action this morning at Elliot Field.

In the first half, Fitchburg State opened the scoring at the 28:39 mark as junior forward Jared Burns gathered a loose ball 25 yards out and lofted a shot into the upper right corner of net for his team-leading sixth score on the season for the 1-0 lead.

Mass. Maritime nearly knotted the scoring in the final minutes of the half when freshman forward William Turner broke free down the near side line and fired a shot that went just wide to preserve the 1-0 advantage going into the break.

Following intermission, The Buccaneers turned up the offensive pressure midway through the frame as senior forward Connor McInnis and sophomore Thomas McCarthy each had quality scoring chances, only to have Falcon keeper Alex Al-Zaibak turn away the first opportunity, while Zachary Tracy  was able to make a huge team save on the latter.

The Falcons best scoring opportunity of the second half occurred in the 70th minute of action when senior Alex Calder blasted a shot on frame, but Mass. Maritime goaltender Joe Cohen was able to corral it, resulting in the 1-0 final.

Throughout the contest, both teams finished with 17 shot apiece, while Mass. Maritime held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. In between the pipes, Al-Zaibak finished with four saves, en-route to earning his first collegiate clean sheet, while Cohen stopped six shots for Mass. Maritime in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (5-6-0, 1-3-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Tuesday as it hosts the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State for a contest starting at 7 p.m. Mass. Maritime (4-6-0, 2-2-0 MASCAC) will visit Brandeis on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
