WPI Shoots Past Fitchburg State, 5-1

Burns notches lone goal for Falcons in non-conference setback

WORCESTER, Mass.  – The Fitchburg State men's soccer team was in action this evening, dropping a 5-1 decision to the Engineers of WPI in non-conference men's soccer action at Alumni Field.

WPI took the early lead just 18 seconds into the first half as sophomore forward Anthony Vigliotta collected a feed from junior Matt Farrell and fired a shot into the left side of the net for his first tally on the season for the 1-0 lead.

The Engineers doubled their margin (2-0) at the 7:42 mark when senior midfield Chris Murray buried a shot into the back of the net for his sixth goal of the 2015 campaign off an assist from sophomore Derrick Naugler.

The hosts upped its lead in the 20th minute of play as freshman back Riley Doherty received a pass from Naugler and rifled a shot inside the near post for his second goal of the season for the 3-0 margin before freshman Ben Nickerson collected his first collegiate tally to make the score 4-0 after 45 minutes of play.

Following the break, Fitchburg State broke its scoring silence (4-1) in the 62nd minute of play when junior forward Jared Burns blasted a shot into the back of the net for his team leading seventh tally on the year.

WPI capped the scoring at the 70:47 mark as sophomore Chris Fernandez settled a feed from classmate Ryan Stokes and deposited the ball into the net for his first score on the year, resulting in the 5-1 final.

Throughout the game, WPI held a 17-5 margin in shots, while also holding a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. In goal, newcomer Connor Smith stopped two shots for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while sophomore Jordan Finzel finished with a pair of saves for the Engineers en-route to earning the clean sheet.

Fitchburg State (5-9-0, 1-4-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Saturday as it travels to MCLA to take on the Trailblazers at 1 p.m.. WPI (10-4-2, 3-1-1 NEWMAC) will host Babson on Saturday for a contest starting at 12 p.m.
