Al-Zaibak stops two shots for Falcons in non-conference setback

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior forward AJ Vico tallied a pair of markers as the Pride of Springfield College defeated Fitchburg State University, 6-0 in non-conference men's soccer action at Brock-Affleck Field this evening.

In the first half, Springfield took the lead just 1:07 into the frame as senior forward AJ Vico collected a feed from sophomore Wayne Belcher and fired a shot into the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.

The Pride doubled their margin (2-0) at the 28:40 mark when junior forward Luke Alvaro buried a shot inside the near post for his team-leading 12th marker on the season.

The hosts upped its lead with 1:34 remaining as sophomore midfielder Tim Wood blasted a shot into the right side of the net for his fifth goal on the year off a feed from classmate Christian Steidle for the 3-0 lead going into the break.

Following intermission, Springfield continued its offensive pressure when freshman forward Nick Fontana connected for his third tally of the 2015 campaign as Vico assisted on the play for the 4-0 advantage.

The Pride capped the scoring late in the contest when Vico deposited the ball into the upper right corner for his second score of the contest before junior Taylor Gilfoy found the net for his second score of the year, resulting in the 6-0.

Throughout the match, Springfield held a 13-5 margin in shots, while both teams finished with two corner kicks apiece. In goal, sophomore Alex Al-Zaibak stopped two shots for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while junior Zach Richard made three first half saves for the Pride in 45 minutes of action.

Fitchburg State (5-10-0, 1-5-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts the Vikings of Salem State University at 10 a.m. Springfield (11-3-11, 3-2-1 NEWMAC) will host the Coast Guard on Saturday for a contest starting at 11:30 a.m.
