Falcons Edged By Cougars, 2-1 In Double Overtime

Loyd nets team leading eighth tally for Fitchburg State in non-conference setback

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State men's soccer team dropped a tough 2-1, double overtime decision to the Cougars of Clark University this evening in non-conference action from Elliot Field.

The Basics

Score: Fitchburg State 1, Clark 2 (2OT)
Records: Fitchburg State (5-5-1) | Clark (9-4)

How It Happened

Clark broke the 0-0 stalemate at the 43:58 mark as senior Trevor Sheridan (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) gathered a feed from senior Jonathan Guilherme (Oxford, Conn.) and deposited a shot into the back of the net for his second tally of the season for the 1-0 advantage.

The Cougars nearly doubled their margin with seconds left with shots from Guilherme, sophomore Daniel Moura (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) and junior Patrick Clark (Plainville, Mass.), but Falcon keeper Sebastian Jaramillo (Dracut, Mass.) made a pair of key saves, while senior Zachary Buckland (Billerica, Mass.) added a team save as well to keep the deficit at 1-0 going into the break.

Following the intermission, the Green and Gold knotted the score (1-1) in the 53rd minute when freshman Alexander Loyd (Kingston, Mass.) received a pass from Buckland, who put a shot inside the far post for his team-leading eighth goal on the year.

In the overtime, the Cougars finally broke the 1-1 deadlock in the 102nd minutes of play as sophomore Brian Brennan (Stoneham, Mass.) buried a shot into the back of the net for his sixth goal of the 2019 campaign off an assist from senior Charlie Lane (Southborough, Mass.), resulting in the 2-1, double overtime final.
