Barber-Amado notches DIII NE qualifying time of 8.87 seconds in the 60m hurdles

Middletown, Conn. – The Fitchburg State University men's indoor track & field team competed at 2020 Wesleyan Invitational this afternoon at the Bacon Field House.

How It Happened

Freshman Zion Barber-Amado led the way for the Falcons, placing third overall in the 60 meter hurdles with a DIII New England qualifying time of 8.87 seconds, while classmate Adam Digman (Winchendon, Mass.) finished eighth in the heptathlon with score of 4,162 points at the 2020 Tufts Branwen Smith-King Invite.

With the 4,162 points, Digman also set a new school record in the heptathlon, surpassing the previous record of 4.157 points, held by former Falcon standout Cameron Stalters, set in 2017.

In the 60 meter dash, junior Asante Monteiro (Fall River, Mass.) (7.23) and Barber-Amado (7.47) finished third and 11th respectively to qualify for MASCAC's, while freshmen Shaki Auston (Springfield, Mass.) and Joshua Ilori added post-season qualifying times of 9.12 seconds and 9.96 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles.

Sophomore Nicholas Sachetta (Billerica, Mass.), newcomer Tyssen LaBombard (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) and junior James Casale (Wakefield, Mass.) turned in post-season qualifying times of 2:39.72, 3:00.72 and 3:11.85 in the 1000 meter after placing second, seventh and ninth, while junior Timothy Sheehy (Wakefield, R.I.) registered a MASCAC qualifying time of 4:37.27 with an eighth place effort in the mile.

In the 3000 meter, junior Jacob Movsessian (New Ipswich, N.H.) (2nd), Sheehy (8th) and freshman Samuel Flint (Methuen, Mass.) (tenth) turned in MASCAC qualifying times of 9:21.8, 9:38.72 and 9:49.71 respectively, while freshman Chris Morales (Lynn, Mass.) posted a post-season qualifying time of 54.58 seconds with a ninth place effort in the 400 meter.

Sophomore Trevor Fields (Shirley, Mass.) and newcomer Romeo Fabre (Leominster, Mass.) collected post-season qualifying times of 1:28.75 and 1:33.40 in the 600 meter after placing fourth and ninth, while in the 200 meter, Monteiro (6th) and Morales (11th) notched MASCAC qualifying times of 23.96 seconds and 23.34 seconds.

In the field, freshmen Brandon Patanao (Marlborough, Mass.) (1.73m) and Zanthius Collins (Franklin, Mass.) (1.73m) finished third and fifth in the high jump to qualify for MASCAC's, while sophomore Cody Soderlund (Middleborough, Mass.) added a post-season qualifying mark of 3.35 meters in the pole vault with a fourth place finish.

In the triple jump, sophomore Brandon McNeil, freshman Eric Shimiyimana (Worcester, Mass.) and classmate Jalen Simpson placed second, fourth and ninth with post-season qualifying jumps of 12.64m, 12.46m and 11.52m, while newcomer Joseph Asare (Brockton, Mass.) placed ninth in the weight throw with MASCAC qualifying toss of 9.96 meters.

In the long jump, Shimiyiman (5th) and Simpson (9th) turned in post-season qualifying marks of 5.97 meters and 5.43 meters, while Asare (11.55m) and Collins (11.28m) rounded out the top efforts on the day for the Green and Gold, finishing seventh and eighth in the shotput to qualify for MASCAC's.

At the 2020 John Terrier Invitational, hosted by Boston University, sophomore Nicholas Sachetta (Billerica, Mass.) posted a personal best time of 2:00.65 in the 800 meter to qualify for MASCAC's, while sophomore Trevor Fields (Shirley, Mass.) (2:01.17), junior Joe Weston (Middleton, Mass.) (2:11.26) and newcomer Samuel Flint (Methuen, Mass.) (2:14.61) all notched post-season qualifying times in the 800 as well with Weston securing a personal best time in the event.
