Fitchburg State losses battle of Falcons

 

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's basketball team dropped a 90-59 decision to the Falcons of Albertus Magnus in non-conference action this evening at the Parkinson Gymnasium.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State netted the first basket of the game, a jumper from sophomore Mishelle Logie (Attleboro, Mass.), for a quick 2-0 lead. However, Albertus Magnus put together a 12-0 run to take control of the first quarter. Senior guard Kristin Cumming (Hoboken, NJ) paced the visitors with 9 points in the frame as AMC raced to a 28-6 lead after one.

Fitchburg closed the gap (33-14) midway through the second stanza with an 8-2 run highlighted by back-to-back layups from freshman Jadelen Harold (Nantucket, Mass.). Albertus closed out the first half with a 9-0 run to make the score 48-18 at intermission.

Following the intermission, Fitchburg State cut into the deficit after a 7-2 stretch on pair of buckets from junior Catherine Coppinger (Boston, Mass.) and three from the charity stripe for Logie, before Albertus Magnus answered back with eight straight points to end the third quarter.  Sophomore Cassie Couture (Waterbury, Conn.) contributed five points in the run.

In the final quarter of play, the Green and Gold won the frame 26-19, but it wasn't enough as the visitors cruised to the 90-59 final.

Inside the Numbers

Fitchburg State shot 21-of-79 (26.6%) from the field and 9.1% (2-for-22) from three point range.

Albertus Magnus went 34-of-70 (48.6%) overall, including (10-for-29) 34.5 % from beyond the arc.

The Green and Gold were led by Coppinger with a team-leading 13 points and 17 rebounds, while Harold added twelve points.

For Albertus Magnus, senior Jill Johnson (North Haven, Conn.) finished with a game-best 22 points, while Cunnings chipped in with 17 points and three rebound.

Fitchburg State travels to Framingham State on Saturday afternoon to kick-off MASCAC conference play, tip-off is 5:00 pm. Albertus Magnus travels to Mitchell College on the same day for a 1:00 pm match-up.
