Falcons Clawed by Owls in MASCAC Action

The Fitchburg State Women's Basketball team dropped a 92-63 decision to the Owls of Westfield State this afternoon  in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from the Parkinson Gymnasium.

How It Happened

Westfield State opened up the first quarter with a 14-4 run capped by a three-pointer from junior Melissa Gray (Peabody, Mass.). The Falcons answered with eight points from the combination of senior Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, NH) and junior Mishelle Logie (Attleboro, Mass.) to close the gap to 15-12. Westfield State countered with an 8-0 run, but senior Catherin Coppinger (Boston, Mass.) finished off the frame with a jumper for the Falcons.

Marazzi knocked down a deep trey to cut the deficit to ten points (27-17) early in the second quarter. The owls connected on six three-pointers to open up a 45-24 margin. Sophomore Jadelen Harold (Nantucket, Mass.) Coppinger and classmate Emma Thomson (York, Me.) closed out the frame with baskets for the hosts as the Owls took a 50-31 lead into intermission.

The Falcons grabbed consecutive baskets from beyond-the-arc from Thomson and junior Payton Holmes (Carver, Mass.) after intermission but a 9-0 run including buckets from senior Chelsea Moussette (Southampton, Mass.) and sophomore  Isabella Aitken (Pittsfield, Mass.) extended Westfield State's lead (66-40).

The Owls secured their 10th win on the season, going on a 13-5 run to open the last quarter as Gray netted six points en-route to the 92-64 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Falcons were led by Thomson with a team-best 14 points, 6 rebounds and a block. Marazzi finished with 12 points, 9 caroms, 4 assists and 2 steals. Coppinger had a game-best 10 rebounds.
  • For the Owls, Gray had a game-best 26 points, while Moussette chipped in with 14 points, 9 assists and 8 steals.
  • Fitchburg State shot 23-for-64 (35.9%) from the field and (7-for-28) 25% from three point range
  • Westfield State finished 33-for-93 (35.5%) overall and (11-of-14) 28.8% for beyond the arc
  • Fitchburg State held a 55-51 margin on the glass
