Falcons Fall To Lancers, 64-44

Worcester, Mass. – The Fitchburg State Women's Basketball team dropped 64-44 decision to the Lancers of Worcester State this evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from the John P. Brissette Court.

How It Happened

1st quarter

Fitchburg State grabbed a 7-4 margin on back-to-back layups from senior Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, N.H.) before Worcester State knotted the score at 7-7 on a bucket and free-throw by senior Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.).The Falcons would take an 11-9 margin after one quarter of play with junior Payton Holmes (Carver, Mass.) connecting on a long range jumper.

2nd quarter

The Green and Gold upped their edge (18-15) as junior Mishelle Logie (Attleboro, Mass.) drained a three-ball and Marazzi added a pair from the free-throw line, but the Lancers regained the lead (26-20 on a Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) jumper. Fitchburg State cut the deficit to 28-22 going into the break when senior Catherine Coppinger (Boston, Mass.) hit a layup.

3rd quarter

Following the intermission, Fitchburg State chipped the lead to 28-27 with Logie notching a layup and Marazzi hitting a three ball before Worcester State extend its margin (35-27) as senior Shaye Lane (Dracut, Mass.) sank two free-throws. The Lancers pushed their margin to 46-29 going into the fourth quarter on a Mosley three-pointer.

 4th quarter

The Falcons opened the final frame with a bucket from freshman Lindsay McDonald (Stoughton, Mass.), but the Lancer responded with a 12-0 run, capped by a Karalyn Gallella (Tewksbury, Mass.) free-throw for the 58-31 advantage.

The Green and Gold answered back with a 10-0 streak as Logie netted four straight points for the visitors before Worcester State secured the victory on a pair from the charity stripe by newcomer Elizabeth Gallella (Tewksbury, Mass.), resulting in the 64-44 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Falcons were paced by Marazzi with a team-leading 18 points, six rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block
  • Logie added eight points, two caroms, one assist and one steal for the Falcons
  • For the Lancers, Mosley finished with game-best 24 points, eight boards, two assists, two steals and one block
  • Sweeney chipped in with eight points, 14 rebounds, one assist, one steal and three blocks for Worcester State
  • 72nd meeting between the two teams on the basketball court with the Falcons 21-51 all-time when taking on the Lancers
