Falcons suffer first setback of 2011 season in NEWLA action this afternoon

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (April 2, 2011) – The Fitchburg State women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Bridgewater State University, 19-3 in NEWLA action this afternoon.

Sophomore Samantha Bonasera (Chelsea, Vt./Chelsea) led Fitchburg State with two points on one goal and one assist, while juniors Kelly Finamore (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) and Amanda Burns (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) notched one goal each.

Fitchburg State would jump out to an early 1-0 lead just 1:26 into the contest as Finamore deposited her tenth goal of the season, but Bridgewater State followed with 12 unanswered goals to take a 12-1 lead at the break. Sophomore Jill Caramello (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) and junior Kristin White (Pelham, Mass./Amherst Regional) led the Bears with three goals apiece, while senior Jenny Jones (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) added a pair of markers.

In the second half, Fitchburg State again opened the frame with an early goal off the stick of Bonasera, but Bridgewater State responded four consecutive goals this time to erase any Falcon rally. Burns broke the Bears scoring streak with 15:44 remaining in the contest, but Bridgewater State added three more scores to post a 19-3 margin as it closed on its eight victory of the season.

Bridgewater State dominated the offensive front, out-shooting Fitchburg State 33-11 in the contest. The Bears also held a 21-13 advantage in groundballs while forcing 20 Falcon turnovers. Freshman Dylana Drolette (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) suffered her first loss of the season, stopping five shots in the complete game effort, while senior Katie Weber (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) turned away five shots in the win.
