Darrigo stops 12 shots for Falcons in non-conference setback
FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's lacrosse team was in action this afternoon, dropping an 11-5 decision to the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Elliot Field.
Eastern Connecticut raced out to a quick 3-0 lead on goals a pair of goals from senior Tess Mraz and a score by junior Caroline Regan before the Falcons answered with a tally from sophomore Carrie Long to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Warriors upped its margin on three consecutive markers by junior Paige Schneider to make the score 6-1. With the score 8-2, Fitchburg State found the back of the net just before halftime as sophomore Bailey Miller connected on her 12th goal on the season as Eastern Connecticut took an 8-3 advantage into the locker room.
Following the break, the visitors opened the scoring in the second half on goals from sophomore Jenna Glynn and classmate Maggie Bodington for the 10-3 lead. The Green and Gold tallied two of the final three scores in the contest as freshmen Anna Gagnon-Burch and Sarah Mallahan netted scored for the Falcons, resulting in the 11-5 final.
Fitchburg State was paced by Long, who posted one point on one goal with seven draw controls, six ground balls and three caused turnovers, while senior Samantha Bontempo added four ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Falcons.
For Eastern Connecticut State, sophomore Katie Burke totaled a game-best four points on one goal and three helpers as well as two ground balls, while Schneider added three points on three markers to go along with three ground balls and one caused turnover.
Throughout the match, Fitchburg State held a 29-26 advantage in shots, while also holding a 29-23 margin in ground balls. In between the pipes, senior Liz Darrigo made 12 saves in the complete game effort for the Falcons, while junior Taylor Emmerson turned away 20 shots for Eastern Connecticut State in 60 minutes of work.
Fitchburg State (5-3, 0-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Saturday as it hosts the Bears of Bridgewater State for a contest starting at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Connecticut State (4-4, 0-0 LEC) will visit Southern Maine on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
