Women’s Lacrosse Earns IWLCA Team Academic Award

Falcons finish 2015-16 academic year with a 3.10 team GPA

FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's lacrosse team was recently honored by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA), earning the IWLCA Team Academic Award for the 2015-16 academic year, while junior Molly Barbarotta was named to the 2016 IWLCA Zag Sports Division III Academic Honor Roll for achieving a cumulative academic GPA of 3.50 or higher during the 2015-16 academic year.

Under head coach Rick Terrio, Fitchburg State recorded a cumulative team GPA of 3.10, earning its third consecutive IWLCA team academic honor and its fourth overall, while Barbarotta registered a cumulative GPA of 3.67 in the field of Biology-Health Sciences to earn her first IWLCA Zag Sports Individual Academic Award.

The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who are a junior, senior or graduate student and have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher for the 2015-16 academic year, while also recognizing teams who have cumulatively achieved a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.

 A total of 276 women's lacrosse teams across the country in Division I, II, III and the NAIA posted a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, thereby earning the IWLCA Team Academic Award for the 20-15-16 academic year, while the IWLCA also honored student-athletes from 149 different institutions with inclusion in the 2016 IWLCA Zag Sports Division III Academic Honor Roll.

Members of the 2016 Fitchburg State Women's Lacrosse team included Jaimee Lutz, Samantha Bontempo, Corinne DeSimone, Anna Gagnon-Burch, Jessica Hall, Carrie Long, Nicole Patterson, Nicole Lee, Maria Giacoletto, Kayla Panek, Maddie Driscoll, Bailey Miller, Sarah Mallahan, Andrea Comeau, Molly BarbarottaBrianna Dunn, Molly Barbarotta, Ali Laferriere, Lia Crutchfield, Michelle Hennessey, Lindsey Luksha and Liz Darrigo

The Fitchburg State women's lacrosse team concluded its 2016 campaign with an overall record of 14-4 and a 5-2 mark in the MASCAC en-route to capturing its first share of the MASCAC regular season crown in the program's history.
