Marshall nets team-leading ninth goal in conference setback

Westfield, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to the Owls of Westfield State University this morning in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Alumni Field.

How It Happened

Westfield State opened the scoring just 1:11 into the contest as senior Nicole Chretien (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) struck for her first goal of the season off an assist from classmate Ashley Levya (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) for the 1-0 edge.

The Owls doubled their lead (2-0) in the 16th minute of action when senior Casey Rotti (Rutland, Mass./Wachusett Regional) blasted a shot into the back of the net for her third score on the year. Fitchburg State cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 30:04 mark as freshman Elicia Marshall (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) gathered a feed from junior Micalea Goldenberg (Douglas, Mass./Douglas) and blasted a shot inside the near post for her team-leading ninth score of the 2018 campaign.

The hosts extended their advantage in the 44th minute of play as freshman Jenn Rennich (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) received a pass from classmate Libby White (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) and connected on her sixth goal on the season for the 3-1 lead going into the half.

Following the intermission, Westfield State tacked on an insurance marker when Chretien netted her second score of the contest on an assist by Rennich, resulting in the 4-1 final.

Inside the Numbers

This afternoon's contest will the 26th meeting between the two squads on the pitch with the Falcons currently 5-19-2 when taking on the Owls.

Westfield State has won six of the las seven contests against Fitchburg State, including a 4-0 decision last season at Elliot Field.

Westfield State held a 19-8 margin in shots, while also finishing with a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.

In goal, sophomore Sarah Hemmings (Eastham, Mass./Nauset Regional) turned aside six shots for the Falcons in the setback, while senior Natalia Falcone (Sutton, Mass./Sutton) made five saves for the Owls in the victory.

Sophomore Haleigh Medlin (Baldwinville, Mass./Monty Tech) registered a team-best two shots for Fitchburg State in the contest..
