Raymond notches second goal of the season for Green and Gold

Westfield, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University field hockey team suffered a tough 3-1 setback to the Owls of Westfield State University this evening in Little East Conference (LEC) action from Alumni Field.

How It Happened

Westfield State grabbed a 1-0 advantage 1:33 into the contest as senior Cheryl Latona (Granby, Conn.) received a pass from classmate Emily Martin (Southwick, Mass.) and struck for her sixth goal on the season.

Fitchburg State knotted the score (1-1) in the 26th minute of action when freshman Alexis Raymond (Tewksbury, Mass.) deposited a shot inside the near post for her second tally of the 2021 campaign off an assist from sophomore Sophia Piper (Chelmsford, Mass.).

The Owls regained the lead with just 40 seconds remaining in the half with senior Allie Giguere (Lynn, Mass.) buried a shot inside the far post for her second goal of the year as Martin assisted on the play to make the score 2-1 going into the break.

Following the intermission, the hosts secured the victory at the 59:5 mark when Latona netted her third goal of the contest with an assist from senior Shannon Raycroft (Barnstable, Mass.), resulting in the 3-1 final.

This evening's contest marked the 42nd meeting between the two squads in the sport of field hockey with the Falcons 16-26 all time when taking on the Owls

Fitchburg State has won the last three matchups against Westfield State, including a 2-1 penalty shootout in the last meeting on October 10, 2021 at Elliot Field.

Westfield State finished with a narrow 17-14 margin in shots, while each team registered six penalty corners.

Sophomore Jenna Morse (Leominster, Mass.) stopped 11 shots for the Falcons

Senior Riley Goulet (Marion, Mass.) made five saves for the Owls

Falcons return to action on Saturday as they host the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State for a Little East Conference tilt, starting at 11:00 AM. Owls will travel to Plymouth State on the same date for a conference matchup at 1:00 PM.
