Iacovelli tallies team-leading seventh goal of the 2021 season
Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University Field Hockey team dropped 3-1 decision to the Huskies of Southern Maine this evening in Little East Conference (LEC) action from Elliot Field.
The Basics
Score: Fitchburg State 1, Southern Maine 3
Records: Fitchburg State (1-14, 0-9 LEC) | Southern Maine (10-7, 7-3 LEC)
How It Happened
Southern Maine opened the scoring at the 4:08 mark of the first period when freshman Sage Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine) collected a rebounded off her own shot after a defensive save by sophomore Emma Ganley (Auburn, Maine) and deposited the ball inside the near post for her seventh goal on the season for the 1-0 edge.
Fitchburg State nearly knotted the score midway through the second frame as freshman Alexis Raymond (Tewksbury, Mass.) and sophomore Jessica Morse (Leominster, Mass.) notched back-to-back shots on target, but Huskies keeper Julianna Kiklis (York, Maine) turned aside both shots to preserve the 1-0 edge going into the half.
Following the break, Southern Maine doubled their margin (2-0) in the 34th minute of action with sophomore Chloe Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine) settled a rebound off the stick of sophomore Jordan Cummings (Auburn, Maine) and struck for her sixth marker of the 2021 campaign.
The Huskies secured the victory minutes later when Arsenault netted her second goal of the contest, firing a shot into the left side of the cage to make the score 3-0. Fitchburg State broke its scoring silence with three second left in regulation when senior Emily Iacovelli (Northbridge, Mass.) collected a loose ball and streaked up the field before slipping a shot inside the far post for her team-leading seventh marker, resulting in the 3-1 final.
