Morse nets second marker of the season for Green and Gold

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University Field Hockey team suffered a tough 2-1 setback to the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth this morning in Little East Conference (LEC) action from Elliot Field.

How It Happened

Following a scoreless first half, UMass Dartmouth took the lead in the 36th minute of action when graduate student Brittany Perry (Dighton, Mass.) settled a rebound and struck for her team-leading 11th goal on the year for the 1-0 edge.

Fitchburg State knotted the score at 1-1 thirty seconds later with sophomore Jessica Morse (Leominster, Mass.) blasted a shot into the right side of the cage for her second tally of the season. The Corsairs regained the lead at the 41:01 mark with senior Hannah Niemi (Fairhaven, Mass.) collected a rebound off the stick of graduate student Mikella DaSilva (Fall River, Mass.) a deposited a shot inside the left post for her third goal of the 2021 campaign as UMass Dartmouth held on the 2-1 final.

This afternoon's contest marked the 23rd meeting between the two squads in the sport of field hockey with the Falcons 7-16 all time when taking on the Corsairs

The two squads have split the previous four matchups, with the Corsairs collecting a 2-0 triumph in the last meeting on October 19, 2019 at Elliot Field

UMass Dartmouth finished with a 17-3 advantage in shots, while also holding a narrow 8-6 edge in penalty corners.

Junior Colleen Lamprey (Cherry Valley, Mass.) stopped 13 shots for the Falcons

Freshman Alyssa McDonough (Hill, N.H.) made one save for the Corsairs

Falcons return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Western Connecticut State for a Little East Conference tilt, starting at 6:00 PM. Corsairs will host Wellesley on the same date for a non-conference clash at 7:00 PM.
