Falcons Soar Past Vikings

Narkevicius notches first collegiate goal for Green and Gold 

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University Field Hockey team earned a 7-1 triumph over the Vikings of Salem State University this evening in Little East Conference (LEC) action from Elliot Field.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State opened the scoring just three minutes into the first quarter as freshman Lena Kassel (Stuttgart, Germany) collected a feed from senior Grace Kerr (Holliston, Mass.) and deposited a shot into the back of the cage for her ninth goal on the season for the 1-0 edge.

The Falcons doubled their margin (2-0) ten minutes later when freshman Sophia Yates (Woodstock, Vt.) redirected a shot from sophomore Alexis Raymond (Tewksbury, Mass.) and tucked the ball inside the right post for her second tally of the year.

The Green and Gold quickly upped their lead in the 13th minute of action with Kerr finding the back of the net for her second tally of the 2022 campaign off an assist from newcomer Olivia Narkevicius (Philipston, Mass.) to make the score 3-0.

Salem State trimmed the lead to 3-1 at the 18:32 mark as senior Melanie Mason (Beverly, Mass.) settled a loose ball of her own rebound and fired a shot into the right side of the cage for her second goal of the season.

Following the intermission, Fitchburg State extended the lead to 6-1 at the 49:06 when senior Sarah Craig (Winchendon, Mass.) struck for her second marker on the year before Narkevicius notched her first collegiate goal as senior Lena Spadafore (Lunenburg, Mass.) assisted on the play, resulting in the 7-1 final.

This evening's contest marked the 42nd meeting between the two squads in the sport of field hockey with the Falcons 17-23-2 all-time when taking on the Vikings

Fitchburg State held a 40-6 margin in shots, including a 16-6 edge in penalty corners

Junior Jenna Morse (Leominster, Mass.) made three saves for the Falcons in the victory

Junior Kaia Hollingsworth (Methuen, Mass.) turned aside 20 shots for the Vikings in the setback
