Falcons Edge Amcats In Non-Conference Tilt

Rennick and Macchioni net first collegiate tallies

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team defeated the Amcats of Anna Maria College, 2-1 this evening in non-conference action from the Wallace Civic Center.

Records: Fitchburg State (16-5-0, 13-3-0 MASCAC) I Anna Maria (9-10-2)

How It Happened

Fitchburg State opened the scoring 3:15 into the first period when freshman Samuel Rennick (Salisbury, Mass.) gathered a feed from classmate Oliver Cookson (Sheffield, Mass.) and tucked a shot inside the near post for his first collegiate marker for the 1-0 edge.

In the middle stanza, the Falcons doubled their advantage with six and half minutes remaining in the frame as freshman Michael Macchioni (North Kingstown, R.I) deposited a shot into the back of the net for his first career goal of an assist from classmate Toivo Kramer (New York, N.Y.) for the 2-0 margin.

Anna Maria trimmed the deficit to 2-1 three minutes later with freshman Derek Raposo (Hannon, Ont.) finding the back of the net off a feed from classmate Colby Wolter (Faium, Alberta), who fired a shot into the upper right corner for his second score of the season.

In the final period of play, Anna Maria nearly knotted the score with roughly five minutes remaining in the contest when senior Sam Cyr-Leddux (Montreal, Que.) skated in on a breakaway, but Falcon keeper Christopher Mattone (New Windsor, N.Y.) turned aside the shot to preserve 2-1 lead.
