Falcon Trio Earn MASCAC All-Conference Honors

McGrath selected to the All-Conference 1st team; Bergeman and Fortin collect 2nd nods

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Fitchburg State senior goaltender Brian McGrath (Worcester, Mass.) and junior forwards Rece Bergeman (Newark, Del.) and Hunter Fortin (Westerville, Ohio) were named to the 2022 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Ice Hockey All-Conference Teams, Falcon head coach Dean Fuller was voted MASCAC Ice Hockey Co-Coach of the Year as announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon

McGrath led all Fitchburg State honorees after being selected the 2022 MASCAC All-Conference First Team, while Bergeman and Fortin garnered MASCAC Second Team All-Conference accolades.

McGrath ranked second in the conference in save percentage (.938), GAA (1.98) and winning percentage (.725).  In addition, Brian totaled 605 saves on the season en-route to bolstering a 14-5-1 record in net for the Green and Gold.

Fortin witnessed a stellar junior season for the Falcons, leading the team in points (27), goals (13) and power-play goals (5), while adding 14 helpers and two game winners. Bergeman was strong for Fitchburg State, posting 25 points on eight markers and a team best 17 assists in addition to one power-play goal, one short-handed tally and three game winners.

Junior forward Myles Abate of Plymouth State took home MASCAC Player of the Year honors, while freshman Erik Larsson  of Salem State earned MASCAC Rookie of the Year accolades.

Fitchburg State head coach Dean Fuller and Plymouth State's Craig Russell were named the 2021-22 Champion's Choice Men's Ice Hockey Co-Coach of the Year.

Joining McGrath and Abbate on the MASCAC All-Conference First-Team were JR Barone and Simon Besner of Plymouth State, Dillon Radin from UMass Dartmouth and Max Roth of Worcester State.

The MASCAC All-Conference Second Team was comprised of Bergeman, Fortin, Larsson, Jake Maynard from UMass Dartmouth, Matt Yianacopolius of Salem State and Valtteri Valtonen from Westfield State.

The Fitchburg State ice hockey team concluded the 2021-22 campaign with an overall record of 17-6-1 and an 14-3-1 clip within conference play, en-route to capturing the second seed in the 2021-22 MASCAC Ice Hockey post-season tournament.
