Falcons slip 5-1 in game one; suffer 7-0 shutout in game two

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (May 1, 2010) -The Fitchburg State softball team suffered a season-ending MASCAC sweep to Framingham State College, slipping 5-1 in game one and falling 7-0 in game two.

In the opener, Framingham State used a three-run fifth inning to grab a four run lead a cruise to its 14th victory of the season.

Sophomore Alyssa Shea (Lakeville, Mass./Apponoquet) and senior Megan Dumas (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) led the Rams offensive attack, hitting 1-for-5 with two walks, two runs scored and two RBI, while freshman Taylor Ezold (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) finished 1-for-3 with a single, one run scored and one RBI.

Fitchburg State received a solid effort from freshman Danielle Correia (W. Bridgewater, Mass./W. Bridgewater) who finished 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and one run scored while senior Leigh Trzcinski (Worcester, Mass./South) and sophomore Kelly Cummings (Natick, Mass./Natick) added one hit apiece.

The Falcons grabbed the early lead with a single run in the top of the second inning as Correia scored off Cummings single, but the Rams closed out the contest with five straight runs to hold off Fitchburg State. Framingham State answered in the bottom of the third with two runs on one hit, before tacking on three in the fifth. Dumas and Ezold led the Rams surge with one RBI apiece, while junior Kasey Phipps (Westford, Mass./Westford) laced a single.

In the circle, junior Nicole Monroe (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) suffered the loss for the Falcons, allowing five run (three earned) and four hits over five innings of work. Sophomore Alysia Morrissette (Ware, Mass./Ware)  earned the victory for the Rams, working six innings of relief with only one run allowed. She limited Fitchburg State to only six hits in the contest while striking out six and walking one.

In the nightcap, Framingham State received a solid pitching performance from Morrissette as she notched a complete game-shutout to lift the Rams to the doubleheader sweep. Morrissette went the distance for the Rams holding Fitchburg State to only four hits and one walk. The second-year hurler notched three strikeouts in the contest to pick up her seventh victory of the season.

Framingham State did most of its damage in the third inning as the Rams used two Falcons errors and three hits to collect four, unearned runs. Dumas notched an RBI single in the frame, while Shea added a base-hit and one run scored. In the fourth, Framingham Stated added another pair of runs to round out the scoring and seal their ninth conference victory. Shea led the charge with her second hit of the game (double), while Dumas followed suit with a RBI single.

On the hill, senior Bethany Stone (Wells, Maine/Wells)suffered the loss, yielding seven runs on eight hits and six walks. Stone finished the contest with eight strikeouts but was the bearer of bad luck, allowing only two earned runs through six innings of work.

Fitchburg State closes its 2010 campaign this afternoon, posting an overall record of 10-14 on the season with a 4-10 mark in the MASCAC. Framingham State (15-19, 9-5 MASCAC) will be in action tomorrow as it travels to Brandeis at 12 p.m.
