Women’s Lacrosse Wins Home Opener Over Corsairs


North Hampton, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's lacrosse team posted a 16-12 victory over the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth in non-conference action this evening at Elliot Field.

How It Happened

Both teams battled to a 2-2 score early in the first frame.  Freshman Alexis Raymond (Tewksbury, Mass.) and classmate Delaney Ponder (East Bridgewater, Mass.) notched goals for the Falcons while Melanny Sanchez Alvarez (Stamford, Conn.) and Kara McLaughlin (Hanover, Mass.) tallied for the Corsairs. The Green and Gold finished the quarter on a 4-1 run, including a pair of goals from Cali Laakso (Fitchburg, Mass.) to take a 6-3 lead.

Senior Julia Miele (South Hadley, Mass.) gave the Falcons an 8-4 lead with a man-up goal at the nine-minute mark of the second quarter. Junior Brooke Johnson (Billerica, Mass.) and Miele closed out the quarter with back-to-back goals to give Fitchburg State the 11-6 advantage at intermission.

UMass Dartmouth closed the gap (12-7) when Sanchez Alva potted her 26th goal of the season at 7:01. The Falcons countered with Ponder's second goal of the game and Miele completed the hat trick to maintain the 14-8 lead.

The Corsairs would net two late goals resulting in the 16-12 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Fitchburg State junior Francesca Reyes (Malden, Mass.) and freshman Alyson Cote (South Hadley, Mass.)  combined for 15 saves in the win.
  • The Falcons held the advantage in shots (38-36) and ground balls (22-17)
  • Freshman Nicole Orlowski (Ellington, Conn.) netted a hat trick for the Falcons while Miele finished with 4 goals, an assist and two ground balls
  • Sanchez Alvarez scored seven goals and one assist for UMass Dartmouth
