How It Happened

Fitchburg State notched the first goal of the game with a free position shot off the stick of junior Brooke Williams (South Dennis, Mass.). The Spartans pushed the score to 3-1 with a pair of goals from sophomore Kimberly McCarthy (West Sayville, NY).

The Green and Gold potted three goals in the second quarter. Senior Julia Miele (South Hadley, Mass.) dished out a pair of helpers to first-year Delaney Ponder (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and junior Eva Kozikowski (Portsmouth, NH) to even the match. Junior Cali Laakso (Fitchburg, Mass.) broke the stalemate with her 12th goal of the season with two minutes left in the first half.

Ahead 5-3 the Falcons notched a pair of goals just 14 seconds apart from Laakso and Kozikowski to hold a 7-3 advantage. Castleton outscored the Falcons 2-1 down the stretch of the third quarter with tallies from Deena Jacunski (Colchester, Vt.) and Lacey Greenamyre (Middlebury, Vt.).

The Spartans opened the fourth with a pair of goals from McCarty, but the hosts answered with a man-up goal from Laakso to maintain a two-goal lead (9-7) with ten minutes to play. Fitchburg would pour on four more goals including a nifty goal from freshman Abaigeal Gilman (Clinton, Mass.)  resulting in the 13-7 final.
