Falcons Drop MASCAC Clash with Bucs

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's lacrosse team fell 15-11  to the Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action on Friday night at Elliot Field

How It Happened

The Falcon opened with goals from freshman Abaigeal Gilman (Clinton, Mass.) and senior Julia Miele (South Hadley, Mass.) to take a quick 2-1 lead. The Bucs countered with scores from senior Alyssa DiScipio (Braintree, Mass.) and sophomore Cassie Llewellyn (Fairfield, Conn.) to forge ahead 3-2. Miele notched her second of the game to knot the score at 3-3, however, MMA closed out the first quarter on a 3-1 run to take a 6-4 lead.

Trailing 8-5, junior Eva Kozikowski (Portsmouth, NH) found an open Nicole Orlowski (Ellington, Conn.) to cut the deficit to 8-6. Senior Nora McLaughlin (Quincy, Mass.) potted a pair to push the Bucs to a 10-6 advantage at halftime.

Fitchburg State outscored the visitors 3-2 in the third quarter. Kozikowski notched a pair of man-down goals and Miele added her 27th goal of the season for the Falcons while McLaughin and DiScipio scored for the Blue and Gold for a 12-9 advantage.

Goals by Orlowski and junior Cali Laakso (Fitchburg, Mass.) made it a 13-11 game with just over five minutes to play but it was too little too late as Massachusetts Maritime added a pair of insurance goals for the 15-11

Inside the Numbers

  • Kozikowski finished with seven points (3 goals, 4 assists), while Miele added 4 goals

  • Orlowski added two goals and two assists with 2 groundballs and a caused turnover for the Falcons

  • McLaughlin and DiScipio each had five goals for the Buccaneers

  • DiScipio notched her 100th career goal on her first score of the game

  • MMA held the advantage in shots (43-25) and ground balls (23-18). Each team had 14 draw controls

  • Junior netminder Aviva Beringhause (Providence, RI) posted 13 saves for the win

  • Freshman Alyson Cote (South Hadley, Mass.) stopped 17 shots in 40 minutes of  relief effort
