Falcons Clipped By Warriors

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's lacrosse team fell 22-12 to the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Elliot Field.

How It Happened

Senior Julia Miele (South Hadley, Mass.) notched her 100th career point just minutes into the game as she tipped the twine with her 28th goal of the season. Eastern Connecticut countered with a pair from junior Chloe Miller (Avon, Conn.) to hold a 2-1 lead. Miele quickly found junior Eva Kozikowski (Portsmouth, NH) to knot the score 2-2.  The Warriors extended the lead to 6-4 to end the first half, with a pair of markers from junior Shay Ventresca (Oakdale, Conn.). 

Eastern Connecticut opened the second quarter with a 6-0 run to forge ahead 12-4. The Falcons cut into the deficit with tallies from Kozikowski and freshman Delaney Ponder (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and junior Cali Laakso (Fitchburg, Mass.) closed out the frame with her 17th goal of the season to trail 17-7 at intermission.

Trailing 20-7, Miele added her second of the game in the third quarter. Laakso notched two markers to start the fourth quarter and newcomer Leah Faria (Acushnet, Mass.) found the back of the net for her first collegiate score.

Inside the Numbers

  • Lasskso finished with four goals, while Faria potted a goal and an assist.

  • Miller finished with six goals and a helper for EConn, while Caroline Stent (Weatogue, Conn.) chipped in with six goals and two assists.

  • EConn held the advantage in shots (47-28), draw controls (18-16), and ground balls (22-12).

  • Junior netminder Sarah Gallagher (South Windsor, Conn.) posted 5 saves in 31 minutes for the win.

  • Junior Francesca Reyes (Malden, Mass.) and freshman Alyson Cote (South Hadley, Mass.) stopped 19 shots in a combined effort for the Falcons.
