Peralta nets third goal of the season for Falcons in non-conference setback 

Portland, Maine. – The Fitchburg State University women's soccer team suffered a tough 3-1 setback to the University of Southern Maine Huskies this afternoon in non-conference action at Hannaford Field.

How It Happened

Southern Maine opened scoring in the 29th minute of action as freshman defender Carlee Long (Greene, Maine) connected for her first collegiate tally for the 1-0 margin before junior midfielder Sarah Michaud (Candia, N.H.) doubled the Huskies lead (2-0) roughly five minutes later, blasting a shot into the back of the net for her first tally on the year.

In the second half, Southern Maine upped it advantage at the 48:53 mark when freshman forward Sarah McLaughlin (Derry, N.H.) netted her second score of the season to make the score 3-0.

Fitchburg State cut into the deficit in the 81st minute of play as sophomore midfielder Brittny Peralta (Leominster, Mass.) settled a feed from freshman Haleigh Medlin (Baldwinville, Mass.) and deposited a shot inside the far post for her third goal on the season, resulting in the 3-1 final.

Inside the Numbers

Just second meeting between two schools on the pitch with the Falcons 0-1-0 when taking on the Huskies.

Southern Maine defeated Fitchburg State, 2-1 on Oct. 19, 2016 in the first meeting between the two schools.

Sophomore Natalie Arsenault (Ashburnham, Mass.) posted four saves for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while junior Taylor Canastra (Fairhaven, Mass.) stopped five shots for Huskies in 90 minutes of work.

Southern Maine held a narrow 12-10 margin in shots, while also finishing with a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.
