McCarthy nets pair of goals for Green and Gold

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's soccer team defeated the Trailblazers of MCLA, 3-0 this afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from Elliot Field.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State took a 1-0 lead into the break as graduate student Shannon McCarthy (Chicopee, Mass.) converted a penalty kick at the 42:03 mark of the first half, depositing a shot inside the near post for her third goal of the 2021 campaign.

Following the intermission, the Green and Gold doubled their advantage just 21 seconds into the frame when McCarthy netted her second tally of the contest, burying a penalty kick into the lower right corner to make the score 2-0.

MCLA nearly dented the scoreboard in the 63rd minute with senior Maddie Gibney (Rensselaer, N.Y.) blasted a shot that deflected off the crossbar. Fitchburg State would tack on an insurance marker minutes later as sophomore Angela Gonzalez (Holland, Mass.) connected on her first collegiate score, resulting in the 3-0 final.

This afternoon's contest marked the 27th meeting between the two schools on the pitch with the Falcons 11-13-3 all-time when taking on the Trailblazers
