Fitchburg State Rallies Past Medaille, 7-4

Mercier notches schools single game K's record with 16

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 14, 2013) – The Fitchburg State baseball team collected its fourth victory of the season after defeating Medaille College, 7-4 over 11 innings at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex this afternoon.

Senior Pat Mercier (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) stole the show for the Falcons, posting a complete game effort, yielding just four runs (three earned) and scattering ten hits. The veteran hurler etched his name in the program record books as he became the all-time single game leader in strikeouts with 16 on the afternoon (2 BB). Mercier surpasses the previous record of 13 set by Bryan Willson in 1992 (UMass Dartmouth – 3/18).

At the plate, junior David Mason (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) narrowly missed Fitchburg State's single game hits mark, posting a 5-for-6 afternoon with two RBI, while senior Jeff Boice (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) added a 3-for-6 performance with a triple and a pair of runs scored. Classmates Randy Ortiz, Jr. (Danielson, Conn./Killingly) and Cody Bamforth (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) were also solid, combining for three hits, two runs scored and four RBI.

Trailing 4-3 in the top of the ninth, Fitchburg State strung together a one run rally to force extra innings. Freshman Javier Lozada (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) led off the inning with a bunt single, stole second and later scored as Boice smashed a hard hit ball through the shortstop.

After a pair of scoreless halves for each team, Fitchburg State responded again with three runs in the top of the eleventh to surge ahead. Senior Rafael Figuereo, Jr. (Dorchester, Mass./Roxbury CC) started the rally with a walk and moved to second following a Boice single. Bamforth then stepped in a put the Falcons up one (5-4) with a double to right, before Fitchburg State pushed home two more runs with RBI's from Ortiz and Mason.

Fitchburg State (4-3, 0-0 MASCAC) concludes its 2013 Florida swing tomorrow as it battles Cazenovia in a doubleheader starting at 9:15 a.m.
