Four Student Athletes Recognized At Thirty-Second Annual Honors Convocation

Fitchburg State acknowledges student-athletes for success in the classroom

The Fitchburg State athletic department would like to acknowledge four student-athletes who were recognized this past Thursday at the Thirty-Second Annual Fitchburg State College Honors Convocation.FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 17, 2009) -

Senior Marla Cavarretta (Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) heads the list of Falcon honorees, earning two accolades at the prestigious event. Cavarretta was named to the Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges list, while receiving the Outstanding Senior in Elementary Education award. Cavarretta has been a consistent performer for the Falcons outdoor track team, racing in the 100 meter dash and more recently finishing 16th overall at the George Davis Invitational at UMass Lowell.

Senior Emily Sullivan (Billerica, Mass./Billerica), a four-year member of Fitchburg State's cross country team, indoor track team and outdoor track team, was also honored at the Convocation. The three-sport captain was named to the Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges list after carrying a 3.29 GPA over her first seven semesters and being an active member in the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). 


 
ANDREW HUTTON

Rounding out the Falcons four award winners was senior captain Wayne Bonkowski (Onsted, Mich./Boston Jr. Blackhawks) and junior Andrew Hutton (Brewster, Mass./Boston Harborwolves) of the Fitchburg State ice hockey team. Bonkowski, the 2009 Leadership in Exercise and Sport Science award winner, has had a strong year both in the classroom and on the ice. The four-year letterwiner collected Fitchburg State's lone President's list award, while being named to the ECAC Northeast All-Academic team for the third consecutive year.

Hutton continued his on ice success in the classroom, earning the Christopher Hughes Memorial Award for academic success in Business Administration. This season, Hutton led the Fitchburg State ice hockey team with a team-best 32 points on 17 goals and 15 assists. He lifted the Falcons to 13-9-5 record overall and a trip to the ECAC Northeast semi-finals, posting a team-high ten power play goals and one game-winner.
