Falcons recognize 129 student-athletes on Spring 2009 honor roll

WAYNE BONKOWSKI

FITCHBURG, Mass. (June 2, 2009) - The Fitchburg State athletic department would like recognize 129 student-athletes who were named to the Spring 2009 Athletic/Academic Honor Roll this past week.

After naming 114 student-athletes to its Fall 2009 Academic Honor Roll, Fitchburg State continues to excel both in the classroom and on the field as forty-one percent (129) of its students-athletes were recognized this spring by achieving a minimum 3.0 grade point average (GPA) during the spring semester. An incredible twenty-nine percent of the student athletes were also named to the Dean's List with a 3.2 GPA or better, while two student-athletes earned the elite President's List honor with a 3.75 GPA or higher.

"This is truly a remarkable accomplishment for these students," said Athletic Director Sue Lauder. "Given the fact that they have extremely tough time demands and grueling schedules, it really speaks strongly of their commitment to academic success."

MARLA CAVARRETTA

Seniors Wayne Bonkowski (Onsted, Mich./Boston Jr. Blackhawks) and Marla Cavarretta (Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) collected the lone President's List honors, after posting a 3.75 GPA or higher for three straight terms. Bonkowski, a four-year defenseman for the Falcons ice hockey team, received his second President's List honor this season, while Cavarretta, a two-sport athlete at the College, earned her first academic accolade.

"The President's List is a significant honor as it is presented over three full semesters," said Sue Lauder. "It demonstrates consistent effort academically and is a testament to Marla and Wayne's constant work ethic in the classroom."

Fitchburg State recently concluded its 2008-09 season and is gearing up for an even more successful 2009-10 campaign. In addition to a MASCAC Championship, the Falcons had a very solid season, collecting 84 conference honors, two MASCAC Rookies of the Year, and three ECAC Championship berths.
