Men’s cross country and track teams earn fourth annual Team of the Year award

FITCHBURG, Mass. (May 11, 2010) – The Fitchburg State Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) named its fourth annual Team of the Year this past week as the men’s cross country and track and field teams took the 2010 crown with a total of 764 points.

The Team of the Year Program is a competition among all of Fitchburg State athletic teams, recognizing excellence in five key areas of the CHAMPS/Life Skills program: academic excellence, athletic excellence, personal development, career development, and community service.  Prior winners of this award have included the Fitchburg State softball team, ice hockey team and women’s basketball team.

“This award represents a commitment from our student-athletes to excel on the field, in the classroom, and in the campus community,” said SAAC Director Michelle Walsh. “I was thrilled to have such a close competition this year and am happy to announce the first Team of the Year victory for our men’s cross-country and track teams.”

This year, the Fitchburg State men’s track and field teams used a balanced effort, using a MASCAC Championship, nine All-Conference players and seven weekly honors to achieve victory. Junior Matt Muolo (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) paved the way for the winners with a pair of All-Conference accolades and a trio of Field Athlete of the Week honors, while the team captured the MASCAC Outdoor Championship in the final week of play to lift them to victory.

This year’s competition was a close one as the Fitchburg State softball team nearly pulled off a repeat victory, placing a close second with 762 points. The women’s basketball team finished third overall with 631 points, while the women’s track team rounded out the top four with 620 points total.
