Fitchburg State SAAC Crowns 2011 Team of the Year

Women’s lacrosse earns fifth annual Team of the Year award

FITCHBURG, Mass. (May 13, 2010) – The Fitchburg State Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) named its fifth annual Team of the Year this past week as the women’s lacrosse team took the 2011 crown with a total of 731 points.

The Team of the Year Program is a competition among all of Fitchburg State athletic teams, recognizing excellence in five key areas of the CHAMPS/Life Skills program: academic excellence, athletic excellence, personal development, career development, and community service.  Prior winners of this award have included the Fitchburg State men’s cross country/outdoor track team, softball team, ice hockey team and women’s basketball team.

“I would like to congratulate all our teams on a job well done this season ,” said Director of Athletics and Recreation Services, Sue Lauder. “For the second year in a row, the Team of the Year competition was close and it truly shows the commitment of our student athletes on the field, in the classroom and in the campus community.”

The women’s lacrosse team enjoyed a successful 2011 campaign, posting a program record 12 victories and earning its second consecutive trip to the post-season. Junior Amanda Burns (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth paved the way for the winners with a NEWLA All-Conference first team accolade and two Player of the Week nominations, while All-Conference second team nominations from Kelly Finamore (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth), Connie Perry (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial), Carissa Kennedy (Somerset, Mass./Bishop Stang) and Dylana Drolette (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) sealed the Team of the Year victory.

This year’s competition was a close as only 50 points separated the top three teams. The Falcons women’s soccer team came within five points of taking the 2011 crown (726), while the men’s outdoor track team finished with 681 points. The ice hockey team capped the top four squads with 641 points on the year.
