David Murphy - 2006 Inductee - 1955 Graduate

David I. Murphy ‘55, retired teacher, U.S. Navy veteran, and all?]around athlete, is being inducted into the Fitchburg State College Athletic Hall of Fame, having excelled in baseball, basketball and soccer.

David played three years of soccer and was co?]captain during his senior season. He played four years of basketball and four years of baseball, where he was also captain his senior year.

During his U.S. Navy service, Murphy was assigned to the USS Wisconsin, and married his college sweetheart, Mary Lou Hickey ‘55. The couple recently celebrated their 50th anniversary on October 6, 2006. Upon completion of David's military service, the Murphys moved to Cromwell, Connecticut, where David began teaching and together they brought four children into the world: LuAnn Murphy of Norwalk, Conn.; Mary Elizabeth Wolak of Rockfall, Conn.; Thomas G. Murphy of Manchester, NH; and Timothy D. Murphy of Cromwell, Conn.

David was recently named the 2006 Cromwell Man of the year, recognizing his 48 years of "integrity, civic mindedness and volunteer service." An avid golfer, David continues to excel in athletics to this day. Having played and coached baseball, basketball and soccer for more than 50 years, he epitomizes excellence in athletics and citizenship and is truly worthy of induction into the Fitchburg State College Athletic Hall of Fame.
