Richard Brown - 1998 Inductee

One of the best pure athletes in FSC history, Richard Brown excelled in the sports of track and football from 1976-79. In his sophomore year, Brown was named Male Athlete of the Year after setting the school-record for the 440 hurdles, ranking him fourth in New England and qualifying him for the NCAA meet. Brown was nominated for All-American honors as a wide receiver and defensive back in 1978, the first year of club football at FSC. He finished third in the nation for punting by a club team. In that same year, Brown qualified for the NCAA outdoor meet in the 100, 200, 440 relay, mile relay and the decathlon. He was ranked 14th in the nation after setting the school-record for the decathlon, earning him a spot on the All-New England Team. Brown was again named the Male Athlete of the Year in 1977-78. Brown enjoyed an outstanding senior year by rewriting the school-record for the decathlon, earning him All-American honors. In 1980, Brown continued training and was offered a Free Agent tryout with the New England Patriots. Of the over 200 free agents that were evaluated, three were awarded NFL contracts. Brown was one of the three signed. He was also honored as the Athlete of the Year and Decade for his hometown of Haverhill, Massachusetts.
