HOME OF THE FITCHBURG STATE FALCONS

Richard York - 1998 Inductee

Richard York participated in three sports while attending Fitchburg Teachers College. After World War II, York was instrumental in the reactivation of the athletics program. Due to budget issues at the time, athletic teams had very little in terms of facilities and equipment. Athletes participated because of their dedication to the sport that they loved. York often assisted Hall of Famer, Coach Bob Elliot in the overall operation of the program. As a student-athlete, York excelled on the soccer field, leading the Falcons in scoring for two seasons from the center forward position. He played four seasons with the baseball team as a pitcher/catcher and also played two seasons as a guard/forward for the basketball team. After graduation, York received his Master's degree in education from Boston University and began teaching in the North Reading and Newton school districts. He moved on to the Cambridge school system where he taught physical education for 24 years, while coaching football, basketball, baseball and soccer.
