Bio

Matt Burke was named athletic director for Fitchburg State University on July 9, 2018. Burke is the third full-time athletic director for the Falcons in the history of the department.

At Fitchburg State, Burke oversees 17 varsity sports, 350 student-athletes, and a staff of over 50 employees at FSU. His responsibilities will include managing the department budget, oversight of all departmental operations and events and fundraising.

“My philosophy is grounded in what Division III is all about,” he said. “The number one priority is to be a student, and earn their degree. I also believe that athletics provides a lot of valuable life lessons. I want every student-athlete to represent the department with pride, wherever they are.”

Burke arrived from Mount Ida College in Newton, Mass., where he had been the executive director of athletics since 2010 and part of the Mustang community since 1998. While at Mount Ida, Burke was responsible for three athletic facility expansion projects, including a new turf field, practice fields and a fitness center expansion. He also increased the number of full-time coaches and launched the addition of field hockey in 2014. Burke was also named Employee of the Year in 2008.

Burke serves on the NCAA’s Division III Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee. Formerly he was the chair of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Ethics Committee, and chair of the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) Athletic Director’s Council.

Burke earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Management from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and received his master's in Business Administration from Nichols College.

Matt and his wife Jen have three children, Joseph, Megan, and Jackson, and reside in Plainville, Massachusetts.
