Fitchburg State Soars Past Elms, 7-0
Falcons rebound with 14th victory of the season behind Phelan's three hits
FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 16, 2009) - Sophomore John Phelan (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) registered a 3-for-4 day as Fitchburg State blanked Elms College, 7-0 in non-conference action this afternoon at Riccards Field.

Phelan paced the Fitchburg State 12-hit attack, finishing with three hits, including a double and two runs scored while senior Kris Breen (Griswold, Conn./Griswold) added a perfect 3-for-3 performance with one RBI. Freshman Brian Ware (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) was also solid for the Falcons with two base-hits, while classmate Michal Mercier (Townsend, Mass./Saint Bernards) chipped in with a hit, three RBI and one stolen base.
Freshman Felix Monalvo (Carolina, PR/Bautista de Carolina) and sophomore Carmino Bonavita (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) led the Elms offense with one hit each.
The Falcons plated single runs in each of the first three innings to jump out to a quick 3-0 lead. Phelan started the Fitchburg State scoring as he touched home one a passed ball in the first frame. Senior right fielder Andy Sauer (Willington, Conn./E.O. Smith) continued the Falcons offense as he delivered an RBI sacrifice fly in the second, while Mercier drew a bases-loaded RBI walk in the third.
Fitchburg State then opened the floodgates and put the game away with a four-run, fifth inning capped by a Mercier two-run single. Breen added to the Falcons rally with an RBI sacrifice fly, while sophomore Chris Smart (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) shipped in with an RBI base-knock.
Rookie hurler Perry Russo (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford) earned his third victory of the season in the complete game effort, tossing a four-hitter while striking out three. Freshman Craig Hippert (South Barre, Mass./Quabbin Regional) took the loss for the Blazers, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits, while walking three and striking out two.
Fitchburg State (14-12, 2-6 MASCAC) returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Bridgewater State College for a conference doubleheader at 12 p.m. Elms College (10-13, 3-3 NECC) returns to action Saturday as well as it hosts Newbury College for a conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
