Fitchburg State Holds Off Fisher, 14-12

Falcons post a season-high 19 hits en route to 12th victory of the season

FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 8, 2009) - The Fitchburg State baseball belted a season-high 19 hits as it topped Fisher College, 14-12 in non-conference action this afternoon. 


 
Sophomore John Phelan notched a
team-high four hits and five RBI.

Sophomore John Phelan (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) led Fitchburg State with a team-high four hits, including two doubles, two runs scored and a team-best five RBI. Senior Aaron Granahan (Thomaston, Conn./Thomaston) added a 3-for-4 performance with a double, three runs scored and one RBI, while sophomore Nick Rocheleau (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) finished 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and one RBI.

Junior Edwin Pena (Union City, N.J./Emerson) led the Fisher 17-hit attack with a 3-for-5 day, including his team-leading ninth homerun of the season and two RBI, while senior Eddy Delcarmen (Boston, Mass./North Florida CC) went 3-for-6 with a homerun, one run scored and four RBI. Classmate Thomas Englehardt (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) chipped in with three hits, three runs and two RBI.

Fisher opened the contest with an early 6-1 lead but Fitchburg State battled back with five runs in the bottom of the sixth frame to take a 9-8 advantage. Phelan led the Falcon comeback with a double to the left center gap that plated two, while junior Ricky Graham (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and senior Andy Sauer (Willington, Conn./E.O. Smith) added RBI base-hits.

Fitchburg State padded its lead with crooked numbers in the seventh and eighth frame, taking a 14-11 lead into the final inning. Sauer and Graham teamed up again in the seventh inning with RBI hits, while Phelan and Granahan laced RBI doubles in the bottom half of the eighth.

In the ninth, Fisher threatened with an early run, cutting the Fitchburg State lead to only two. Fisher continued to threaten later in the inning, loading the bases with two out, but Fitchburg State pitcher Tyler Kendrick (Montague, Mass./Smith Academy) settled down, securing the Falcons victory with his first collegiate save.

Junior Matt Morrison (Beverly,  Mass./Bishop Fenwick) earned the victory for Fitchburg State (1-0), tossing 3.2 innings of solid relief. The veteran hurler yielded only three earned runs on six hits while striking out one. Freshman Austin Brodie (Haverhill, Mass./Whittier Tech) suffered the loss for Fisher, allowing three runs in 1.1 innings of work.

Fitchburg State (12-8, 1-3 MASCAC) will be back in action on Friday as it travels to MCLA at 2 p.m. Fisher will travel UMaine Presque Isle tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
