 Phelan collects two-hits in Falcons MASCAC opener

WESTFIELD, Mass. (March 28, 2009) - Junior Jeff Fields (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) and classmate Ben Campbell (East Hampton, Mass./East Hampton) combined for seven hits and 12 RBI as Westfield State powered past Fitchburg State 11-1 and 8-1 in a MASCAC doubleheader this afternoon.

two hits in game one for the Falcons.

In the opener, Fields and Campbell both finished 2-for-4 with four RBI as Westfield State jumped out to an early 7-0 lead over the first two innings of play. The duo delivered early in the first inning with RBI singles before belting RBI doubles in the second frame. Freshman Alex Xiarhos (Yarmouth Port, Mass./Dennis Yarmouth) was also solid for the Owls with two singles, while sophomore John Phelan (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) hit 2-for-3 for the Falcons.

Westfield starting pitcher Jesse Vermeesch (Marlboro, Mass./Hudson Catholic) threw five solid innings to earn the victory, allowing three hits and two walks, while striking out four. Fitchburg State senior Andy Sauer (Willington, Conn./E.O. Smith) suffered the loss for the Falcons, yielding seven runs (six earned) on five hits in 1.2 innings pitched.

In the nightcap, junior Mike Trachtenberg (Newton, Mass./Newton South) led the Westfield State 11 hit attack, going 2-for-4 with one runs scored and two RBI, while classmate Ben Wagner (Cumberland, R.I./Mt. St. Charles) finished 2-for-3 with  two runs scored and one RBI. Sauer finished strong for the Falcons, totaling two base-hits and one RBI, while junior Matt Morrison (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) and freshman Tom Dolan (Stamford, Conn./Westhill) added one hit apiece.

Westfield State broke open a 2-1 game in the bottom of the fourth frame, plating four runs on four hits to take a 6-1 advantage. Fields led the Owl four run fourth inning with a two-run double, while Wagner knocked an RBI single to right.

Fields also led the Owls on the hill in game two, hurling five complete innings for the victory. The junior starter allowed only one earned run and four hits, while striking out two and walking one. Freshman Tyler Kendrick (Montague, Mass./Smith Academy) suffered the loss for the Falcons, allowing five earned runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings pitched.

Fitchburg State (8-6, 0-2 MASCAC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it travels to Newbury College at 3:30 p.m. Westfield State (10-5, 2-0 MASCAC) will travel to Western Connecticut on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
