Falcons post tenth victory of the season with non-conference win over Blazers

CHICOPEE, Mass. (April 15, 2010) - The Fitchburg State baseball team collected its tenth victory of the season, topping Elms College, 10-5 in non-conference action Thursday evening.

Junior Dave Alexander (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) jolted Fitchburg State’s 15-hit attack, finishing 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and one RBI, while classmate Ricky Graham (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) supplied the Falcon power, connecting for his second long-ball of the season, two runs scored and two RBI.

Junior Erik DiMauro (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) was also solid offensively for the Falcons, hitting 3-for-5 in the contest with a double and two RBI, while sophomore Bobby Ewing (South Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) rounded out the Fitchburg State hitting barrage with a 2-for-5 night.

Elms got off to a quick start, taking a 3-1 lead after two innings of play as the Blazers posted a pair of runs in the first and a single run in the second. Sophomore Nicolino Iavicoli (Hampden, Mass./Hampden) sparked the Elms first inning rally with a RBI double and later scored on a Mike Andrews (Greenfield, Mass.) base hit.

In the fourth, Fitchburg State responded with five runs on six hits and one error to take its first lead of the contest (6-3). Alexander kick-started the Falcons rally with a lead-off single to left field before Graham stepped in and sent a two-run blast over the right-field fence. DiMauro and Ewing continued the Falcon rally with back-to-back two-out hits before sophomore Andrew Foster (East Bridgewater, Mass.) smacked a RBI single to give Fitchburg State and one-run lead.

Holding a 6-3 lead after six innings of play, the Falcons tacked on four more runs over the last three innings to seal its second straight victory. Alexander led the Fitchburg State’s seventh inning surge with a RBI double to left field before posting consecutive hits with Graham in the Falcons two-run eighth.

Senior Marshall Miller (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) earned the victory for the Falcons (2-1), tossing two effective innings with only one hit allowed and three strikeouts. Junior Mike Scaramellino (Dover Plains, N.Y/Dover Plains) and freshman Dylan Smith (New London, Conn./New London) also saw action in relief for the Falcons, combining for 3.2 IP, 4H and 3 K’s, while rookie Randy Ortiz (Danielson, Conn./Killingly) closed the door with 1.1 innings of shutout work (3 K’s).

Fitchburg State (10-9, 1-3 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts MCLA at 12 p.m. Elms (5-16, 1-5 NECC) will travel to Southern Vermont on Saturday at 12 p.m.
