Phelan smack three hits and four RBI in Falcons non-conference victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 6, 2010) - Junior John Phelan (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) notched three hits to pace a Fitchburg State 18 hit attack as the Falcons rolled to an 11-5 victory over Fisher College in non-conference action this afternoon.

Junior John Phelan notched three hits
with four RBI to lead Fitchburg State.

Phelan enjoyed a 3-for-5 day at the plate, falling just a homerun shy of the cycle while scoring one run and driving in four. Classmate Dave Alexander (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) added his third homerun in just two games to lift the Falcons power, while sophomore Bobby Ewing (South Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) hit a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, one run scored and three RBI.

Fitchburg State jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after four innings of play and never trailed as the Falcons picked up their seventh victory of the season. The Green and Gold struck for a trio of runs in the bottom of the third inning as Phelan belted a double to right center, clearing the bases that were loaded from a Ewing double, a Brian Ware (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) single and a Will Comerford (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) walk.

Fisher rallied back with three runs in the top of the fifth frame as Jose Rodriguez (Clermont, Fla./South Florida) and Edwin Pena (Union City, N.J./Emerson) notched RBI hits, but the Falcons ended any Fisher comeback, posting two runs in the sixth and five runs in the eighth. In the sixth, Fitchburg State plated a pair as Ewing blasted his third hit of the day with a liner to left, while Alexander paced a five run eighth with his third homerun of the season.

Freshman John Chase (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) earned the victory in relief for the Falcons (1-1), scattering seven hits and two runs over 3.2 innings of work. The Falcons receive a strong start from Marshall Miller (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) who tossed the first 4.2 innings, yielding only two hits and three runs while striking out a pair.
