Falcons drop third consecutive game as offense continues to slump

LYNN, Mass. (April 20, 2010) - The Fitchburg State baseball team was back in action for the third consecutive day, suffering a 13-3 non-conference setback to Fisher College at Frasier Field this evening.

Fisher pounded out 15 hits and 13 runs to cruise to its 17th victory of the season, while the Falcons pitching staff held Fitchburg State to just five hits in the contest. Senior Patrick Shanahan (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) kept the Green and Gold off-balance for most of the game, yielding three runs (two earned) on three hits through six innings of work. The four-year hurler struck out nine, while only walking three.

Fitchburg State got on the board first, posting a single run in the top of the first inning, but Fisher quickly squashed the Falcons lead, posting seven runs over the next three frames. Fisher knotted the score immediately with a single run in the bottom half of the first, before exploding for six runs in the third stanza for a strong, 6-2 lead.

.In the fourth, Fitchburg State manufactured a run to cut the Fisher lead to 6-3 using a pair of walks and a hit batter, but Fisher answered again in bulk, totaling six more runs over a trio of frames. The Blue and Grey regained its four run advantage in the fifth, before putting the game out of reach with five runs on four hits and two errors in the seventh.

Senior Corey Donovan (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) suffered the loss for Fitchburg State (1-1), surrendering seven runs (six earned), six hits and four walks over 2.1 innings pitched. Sophomore Perry Russo (E. Hartford, Conn./East Hartford) pitched effectively in relief for the Falcons, holding Fisher to only one run and three hits (2 K’s) over 3.2 innings of work.

On the offensive end, juniorAndrew Foster (E. Bridgewater, Mass./E. Bridgewater) registered two of the Falcons five hits, going 2-for-5 with a stolen base, while freshman Cody Bamforth (Vernon, Conn./ Rockville) added a double. Junior John Phelan (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) rounded out the Fitchburg State offense, finishing 1-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Fitchburg State (12-12, 3-5 MASCAC) will be back in action on Thursday as it hosts Keene State College at 3:30 p.m. Fisher (17-6, 8-0 SC) will visit Gordon College on Thursday at 3 p.m.
