Falcons edged 5-4 in game one; nipped 7-5 in the nightcap

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (May 1, 2010) - The Fitchburg State baseball team suffered a MASCAC doubleheader sweep to Framingham State College at Bowditch Field this afternoon. Junior Sean Callahan (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) belted a three run walk off home run to propel Framingham State to a 5-4 game one victory, before freshman Will Crofton (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) hit a two run shot in game two to lift the Rams to a 7-5 win.

In the first game, the Falcons scored two runs in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by junior Ricky Graham (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) to break a 2-2 tie and take a 4-2 lead.

Fitchburg State continued to cruise as sophomore Michal Mercier (Townsend, Mass./Saint Bernards) retired the next eight batters in a row and was just one out away from the win. But with two outs in the seventh, Crofton started the Framingham State comeback with a single and junior Corey Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) followed with a single of his own setting the table for Callahan’s second walk off homerun of the season.

On the offensive end, freshman Cody Bamforth (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) led Fitchburg State, hitting 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI, while junior Andrew Foster (E. Bridgewater, Mass./E. Bridgewater) finished with a pair of hits and one run scored. Junior John Phelan (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) added a single and two walks on the afternoon, while classmate Nick Rocheleau (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) wrapped up the hitting with a double, two runs scored and one RBI.

On the hill, Mike Cain (Gloucester, Mass./Gloucester) picked up the win in game one for the Rams, pitching an inning of scoreless relief, while starter Charlie Spear (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) went six innings allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits with three walks. Mercier went the distance for the Falcons, allowing five runs on ten hits while striking out four.

In game two, the Falcons jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as Foster doubled in the top of the first and came around to score on a single from classmate Dave Alexander (Torrington, Conn./Torrington). The Falcons added two more runs in the top of the second for an early 3-0 advantage, but the Rams responded with two scores in the bottom of the second on RBI hits by senior Ryan McCarthy (Watertown, Mass.) and Sheehan to cut the Falcon lead to one. 

Fitchburg State continued its offensive effort in the fourth with two runs on a RBI ground out by Graham and a Framingham State error, but the Rams answered again as junior Steven Tramontozzi (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) belted a solo homerun to left and Danny Chaisson (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) doubled and scored.

The Rams tied the game with an unearned run in the fifth and took the lead in the bottom of the sixth on Crofton’s two run blast that made the score 7-5. Cain pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up his fourth save of the season, while starter Tommy Lindberg (Stratford, Conn.) picked up the win going six innings allowing five runs, three earned, on 11 hits.

Foster led Fitchburg State offensively, hitting 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI, while junior Will Comerford (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) finished with three hits. On the mound, freshman Alex Teal (Malden, Mass./Malden) suffered the loss, yielding seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and one walk.

Fitchburg State (15-17, 6-8 MASCAC) will be back in action tomorrow as it hosts Amherst College at 12 p.m. Framingham State concludes the 2010 regular season with a 23-15 record overall and 11-3 clip in the MASCAC.
