FITCHBURG, Mass. (June 10, 2010) – The Fitchburg State baseball team inked its first summer league contract under third-year head coach Todd Lynch as sophomore Michal Mercier (Townsend, Mass./Saint Bernards) signed with The Waves of the developmental River Valley League (RVL).

The River Valley League is a wood bat league based out of the Mississippi River Valley region of Dubuque, Iowa. It consists of a 32-36 game schedule, including a seven-week regular season, daily practice sessions, and a RVL post-season tournament. The RVL is designed to give college players a platform to build their baseball resume with top tier talent from across the nation and professional scouts on hand.

This year, Mercier experienced a solid sophomore season, serving a dual role both on the bump and in the outfield. He finished the 2010 campaign with a 3-3 record, 31 K’s and 45.2 IP, while registering four complete games. He ranked first among all Falcon starters with a 3.35 ERA, while ranking fourth overall in the highly competitive, MASCAC Conference.

In addition to his success on the hill, Mercier was also clutch at the plate, totaling 27 hits with 20 runs scored and 18 RBI. He recorded nine extra base-hits, including six doubles, two triples, and one homerun, while totaling three stolen bases and a .981 fielding percentage.

“This is a great opportunity for Mike as he has proven to be a fierce competitor at Fitchburg State,” said Lynch. “He is a player that every coach wants on their team and this selection is just another example of his tireless work ethic and leadership qualities.”

The Waves will open up their 2010 Summer League schedule on June 16th as they travel to the RVL Snappers at 4 p.m. For more information regarding Fitchburg State athletics or Falcons baseball, please contact Sports Information Director, Keith Brouillard via email at kbrouil3@fsc.edu
