UMass Boston Takes Down Fitchburg State, 10-3

Silberman finishes 2-for-4 with two RBI in Falcons setback to Beacons

FITCHBURG, Mass. (March 27, 2012) – The Fitchburg State baseball team dropped a 10-3 decision to the Beacons of UMass Boston in a non-conference contest this afternoon at Riccards Field.

UMass Boston pounded out ten runs on 14 hits to collect its seventh victory of the season. Senior Mark McCormick (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) led the Beacons offensively, going 4-for-5 at the plate with a triple and three runs scored, while sophomore Jamill Moquette (Boston, Mass./Madison Park) added a pair of doubles, four runs scored and two RBI. Classmate Taylor Kapulka (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) was also solid, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Beacons jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of first inning, capitalizing on a passed ball by the Falcons, but Fitchburg State quickly knotted the score (1-1) in the bottom of the frame as junior Chris Rivera (New Britain, Conn./New Britain) connected for an RBI double to plate classmate Jeff Boice (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury).The Beacons surged ahead in the top of the second (3-1), plating a pair of runs on a Falcon throwing error and an RBI double by Moquette before padding its lead (6-1) over the next two innings with a single run in the third and a pair of runs in the fourth.

Fitchburg State cut the deficit to 6-3 in the bottom of the fourth, as junior AJ Silberman (Meriden, Conn./Wilcox Tech) laced a two run single to right field but three runs was also close as the Falcons would get as the Beacons tacked on four runs in the final four innings of play to secure the victory.

Junior Tom Cole (Mattapoisett, Mass./Old Rochester) (2-1) picked up the win for UMass Boston, allowing three earned runs on five hits, while striking out four and walking just two in five innings. Junior southpaw Randy Ortiz, Jr. (Danielson, Conn./Killingly) suffered the setback for Fitchburg State, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits over his three innings of work.

Silberman led the Falcons on the offensive end, hitting 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while Boice and Rivera combined for a pair of doubles, a run scored and one RBI.

Fitchburg State (2-11, 0-0 MASCAC) returns to action tomorrow as its hosts Daniel Webster at 3:30 p.m. UMass Boston (7-5, 0-0 LEC) is back in action tomorrow as well as it travels to Saint Joseph's College (Me.) at 3:30 p.m.
